Capítulo 1554: Chapter 1554: A Dull New Year
The New Year at the Graves Family was quite dull.
There were simply too many people, each with their own thoughts. This large group of people eating together, calling it a family reunion dinner, didn’t feel warm. It was merely a ritual passed down through the generations in the Graves Family, like a tradition.
As the family head, Gavin Graves naturally couldn’t leave the table, having to deal with various distant relatives and neighbors.
The older relatives always had to put on airs in front of him, which he usually brushed off. But during New Year’s and festivals, he had to leave some room for courtesy, enduring the annoyance while listening to their ramblings.
Mrs. Graves didn’t like New Year either.
Because she could only sit in the most out-of-the-way place with Elder Master Graves’ mistresses. Like a concubine of old times, even though her son is now the family head, she still has no social status and cannot sit in Old Mrs. Graves’ chair.
As for Cherry, it was even more boring…
Gavin was clearly sitting right next to her, yet he had no time to keep her company. She sat dryly for most of the day. They barely exchanged a few words, and he only helped her with the dishes once.
This tedious boredom continued until nine in the evening when they finally left the old mansion by car.
In the car, Cherry complained, “I don’t want to celebrate New Year ever again. It’s so meaningless, just people I don’t know, forcing themselves to smile and come over and talk…”
Mrs. Graves was originally downhearted too. Hearing her complain, she couldn’t help but let out a sigh, and said, “In another week or so, we’ll have to organize the Spring Banquet. Every family’s mistress will organize one, and this year it’s my turn. So you pay attention, next year it’ll be your turn!”
“I’m not going, it’s boring to death.” Cherry replied, pouting.
“You don’t go to this, you don’t go to that, what exactly do you want to do? Don’t you want to socialize? Don’t you want to network?” Mrs. Graves got angry listening to Cherry.
Gavin spoke up, “Mom, there’s no need for a big Spring Banquet this year. Zimo and I might go out of town.”
Mrs. Graves was slightly stunned, “Out of town? Where are you going?”
“Not sure yet.” Gavin replied indifferently, “We’ll see when the time comes.”
His uncertain tone made it seem as if he was planning a trip but hadn’t decided on the sights to see.
Mrs. Graves was about to ask him when they’d leave, couldn’t it wait until after the Spring Banquet? But remembering her eldest son’s temper, if he didn’t want to say, asking would be pointless, so she didn’t bother to ask.
New Year’s Eve passed peacefully like this.
After the New Year, people started coming one after another to pay their respects to Gavin.
Lester Williams also came on behalf of some subordinates to pay their respects, bringing two amulets. It was said that he gathered 399 brothers, each going to the temple to kowtow once, totaling 399 times to get these two amulets.
Since returning from the cruise, Gavin’s subordinates viewed Cherry more favorably, so these two amulets were for Gavin and Cherry, one each.
The amulets were yellow talisman paper folded into triangles.
Cherry pinched it in her hand, not feeling anything special, and secretly opened it while Gavin wasn’t paying attention. The yellow paper had some scribblings on it.
She frowned, looking at it horizontally, vertically, diagonally, but couldn’t figure out what was written.
“I can’t believe someone writes worse than me…”
Gavin heard her mutter, shook his head with a smile, and pulled the paper from her hand, folding it back up.
“Don’t damage it, it’s for protection.”
Cherry asked wide-eyed, “Just this piece of paper, can keep us safe?”
Gavin said, “This paper holds everyone’s blessings for you, it has a different meaning.”
Cherry thought about it, found a servant, and asked them to buy her a stack of yellow paper like this.
