Chapter 1553: Chapter 1553: Possessed
Ruth Frazer didn’t stay at Gavin Graves’ house for too long.
After sitting for a while, she left with Gerald Graves.
She always carried herself with restraint, projecting an image of being aloof yet not arrogant, never making anyone feel she was overly enthusiastic.
Not everyone possesses this self-control, especially when… even though she was eager to know how Gavin had recovered, she could only endure and subtly probe, making her seem even more poised.
Gavin was already convinced in his heart that Ruth Frazer’s husband, Moissanite, must have met some misfortune.
As for why she would choose to conceal her husband’s death, Gavin was temporarily unable to speculate.
Moissanite’s parents had long passed away, and he had no children; if he were dead, all the inheritance would become Ruth Frazer’s.
The most precious of all would be Moissanite’s paintings, which would rapidly appreciate in value.
So, Gavin really couldn’t understand why Ruth would choose to hide it, unless Moissanite’s death was related to her?
Gavin opened the study room door; Cherry was seated at the table, writing carefully, stroke by stroke.
“Earlier, that woman, did you notice anything wrong?” Gavin weighed his words.
Cherry looked up at him, her face puzzled, “That woman? What’s wrong with her?”
“Did you see any evil energy on her? Like the kind that grew on my arm before,” Gavin asked her.
Cherry widened her eyes slightly, “Nope.”
Gavin furrowed his brow, concentrating in thought.
This doesn’t make sense… they were a couple who spent day and night together, so why did the husband meet trouble while the wife remains unaffected?
Seeing him silent, Cherry thought he didn’t believe her, and continued, “I really didn’t see; that kind of thing is so sinister, if it were on her, I’d surely be able to spot it at a glance.”
Gavin snapped back, smiling as he patted her head, “If not, then that’s fine.”
He was just so determined to figure out this matter, becoming somewhat obsessed…
…
At night, Gavin took out the Kalinga painting again, scrutinizing the elephants and the little figures holding weapons.
Cherry had said before that this painting was clean, with no issues.
Could it be… he was mistaken?
Maybe the sinister entity on his arm had nothing to do with the couple, maybe Moissanite indeed went out searching for inspiration, maybe Ruth Frazer was just purely curious, maybe all of this was just his own paranoia…
Gavin’s thoughts were getting a bit delusional.
He took a deep breath, silently advising himself to maintain his composure.
It was precisely because this matter had been weighing heavily on his mind for so long, that without any answers, he had never mentioned it. Now suddenly seeing Ruth Frazer, all the accumulated emotions surged in his heart like a raging sea—
Thinking back over the past two years, he had traveled the world searching for mages and witch doctors, repeatedly experiencing hope and disappointment, only to watch helplessly as that thing spread and grew inside his body. That sense of helplessness and anger had to be hidden, pretending that everything was fine while managing family affairs and arranging his own afterlife affairs. The panic, the solitude, the unspeakable despair… it was indescribably bleak.
Cherry turned over in bed, feeling the empty space beside her, somewhat groggily sitting up.
“Gavin…” she murmured his name.
Gavin snapped back, returned to bed, and embraced Cherry.
Luckily, he was already fine.
After the New Year, he planned to visit Ruth Frazer’s house, perhaps he would find the answer… No matter what, this matter had to be resolved.
The breathing of the girl in his embrace was long and soft; Gavin bowed his head, resting it against her forehead, and closed his eyes.
