Chapter 399: Chapter 399: Focus On Driving!
"It seems you’ve already decided to leave me. Did you just make your decision now, or have you been planning it all along?" Daniel turned to her. His voice was calm, but his eyes were filled with cold stares.
Chantelle noticed the car speeding up. It didn’t even stop after running a red light. She didn’t want to provoke him further, so she shut her mouth.
"Chantelle, do you know what’s even more painful? You don’t even want to talk to me anymore." Daniel let out a mocking smile.
Chantelle suddenly reached out and grabbed his veined arm. She took a deep breath and said, "I never said I would leave you. I only planned to go back to Easthan. Even if you don’t want me to return, I still want to go back."
Daniel shot her a glance, as if to confirm she was telling the truth.
Chantelle pinched his arm angrily. "Focus on driving! Do you think I’m that stupid? That I’ll just do whatever others say?"
Daniel gradually slowed down the car speed, and his expression wasn’t as frightening as before.
Chantelle, however, was still angry. Everyone kept threatening her, as if she were someone easy to bully.
"You were so frightened you didn’t even see that person. From the start, I never wanted you to fight against her. If you’re afraid of getting into trouble, just tell me. I’ll stay far away from you. Why make such a fuss and beat around the bush?"
Daniel was stunned by Chantelle’s words. He had gotten angry because she seemed distant after talking with Ciara, and it made him anxious. But he hadn’t expected her to think he was afraid of Ciara and had lost his temper just to push her away.
"Don’t talk nonsense! Do I look like a man without guts? I’m not even afraid of the devil. How could I be afraid of a woman? You have no confidence in yourself or in me. That’s why you think like that."
Daniel sounded embarrassed, and his voice wasn’t as loud as before.
Chantelle crossed her arms over her chest, leaned back in the seat, and closed her eyes to doze off. No matter what Daniel said, she refused to answer anymore.
Although they had spoken impulsively, Daniel was right. She had no confidence. So when she sensed that Daniel didn’t want to be tied to her and even thought of giving her up, she never dared to take a step forward.
The sadness she suddenly felt a while ago woke her up. As long as she stayed beside Daniel, she couldn’t control her feelings for him. If he ever became tired of her, she might repeat the same mistakes from six years ago.
Daniel also knew his words earlier weren’t right, but Chantelle had said the same thing to him before, and he hadn’t taken it seriously.
They returned to the research site in silence. Stephanie was the first to run out, wrapping her arms around Daniel’s leg. "Daddy!"
"Steph, does it still hurt?" Daniel asked. His face darkened when he saw the anti-swelling ointment smeared across her cheeks.
Stephanie touched his eyelids and said, "Daddy, I don’t feel pain anymore."
Then she quickly noticed the strange atmosphere between Daniel and Chantelle.
Are they fighting again? Why do Daddy and Mommy always quarrel? They’re just like children.
Stephanie sighed. She unwrapped her arms around Daniel’s leg, stood between them, and held their hands. "Let’s eat together! I’m hungry."
Chantelle had planned to talk with Russell and Calvin, but she couldn’t bear to refuse Stephanie. So she followed her to the cafeteria.
"Daddy, Mommy, you two sit here." Stephanie pulled Daniel and Chantelle into two chairs side by side.
After Daniel sat down, he placed some food onto Chantelle’s plate. "Eat now. I heard your stomach growling just a moment ago."
Chantelle was speechless. She wanted to get up and sit across from him, but Stephanie quickly sat beside her and copied Daniel, picking food for her. "Mommy, eat now."
Stephanie looked at her eagerly that Chantelle couldn’t bring herself to move away.
"Where are Kane and Rai?" Chantelle asked.
Stephanie quickly replied, "In the room. Kane asked Rai to play his new game."
Chantelle felt Kane couldn’t stay in front of the computer all day. Not only would he lack exercise, but his eyesight could also get worse. She had to limit his computer time every day.
"In the future, I’ll work for two hours a day. Kane and Rai can only use the computer during that time," Daniel said.
Chantelle also needed to work daily. She wanted to suggest taking Kane with her while she worked.
"I saw Uncle Philip turn the next room into a computer room. He said we could go there to use the computer. The equipment inside is all the newest," Stephanie added while she winked at Daniel.
Daniel caught Stephanie’s hint and gave her a thumbs-up under the table.
Chantelle thought it didn’t matter since she had her own laptop, so she wouldn’t need to go to the computer room with them. But when she returned to her room, she discovered Kane had dismantled her laptop.
Stephanie explained to Chantelle that Kane needed a chip from it.
Chantelle was so angry that she stormed to Kane’s room to scold him. But after knocking for a long time, there was no response from inside. She instantly felt nervous, and a bad feeling rose in her chest.
She forced the door open and saw that the room was empty.
She panicked. Forgetting the argument with Daniel earlier, she rushed to Stephanie’s room to find him.
"Kane and Rai are gone!" Chantelle shouted at the door before turning to leave.
Daniel’s face darkened instantly. He put Stephanie down from his shoulders and ran after Chantelle.
"Stay calm! Tell Russell to check the surveillance cameras."
Chantelle slapped her forehead and immediately headed to Russell. But just as she reached his office, a message came through.
Kane had written, "Dear Mommy, your two boys are out for a stroll. We’ll be back soon, don’t worry!"
"I’ll give you five minutes. Come back now!" Chantelle typed with trembling hands.
"Rai said we’ll come back later to plead guilty! Rai told me not to play with my phone. Dear Mommy, goodbye!"
"Kane! Come back now!" Chantelle typed again.
But Kane didn’t read her message anymore, and Chantelle was furious. Daniel looked proud of Kane, but he quickly hid it when Chantelle shot him a glare.
Kane and Railer sneaked out to take revenge for Stephanie. But instead of going straight to Caitlin’s house, they went to a coffee shop.
"Rai, order whatever you want! I’ll treat you today!" Kane patted his chest proudly. After all, he had millions in pocket money now.
