Holy shit, a sneak attack!
My body, after so many near-death battles, had already developed an instinctive physical reaction.
The thought had barely flickered in my mind before my body reacted.
A normal person's reaction would be to turn around immediately and confirm what was attacking, but that would leave no time to dodge.
So, I gathered my energy to my dantian and executed a perfect arch, dodging the flying arrow shot at me.
At such a critical juncture, I couldn't possibly worry about Mr. A, who was standing beside me; I could only wish him good luck.
Honestly, I was being generous. Otherwise, I would have dragged him over to be a human shield!
The flying arrow pierced my tent, slicing open a large gash.
I quickly turned my head to glance at Mr. A, who had been next to me. I discovered that the guy had some skills too. He had dodged all the flying arrows that were shot at him and, in such a short time, had darted behind the tent, using it as cover, only his head exposed as he surveyed the surroundings.
Damn it, you're one fast runner!
At this moment, the enemy was still hidden in the shadows, and I couldn't afford even a moment's distraction. So, I only cursed inwardly and focused my attention on observing my surroundings.
The night was exceptionally cold today. A north wind howled, rustling the few remaining leaves on the nearby trees ceaselessly.
The scene fell silent, as if the attack we had just experienced was merely an illusion.
I crouched and slowly drew the hunting knife from my waist. The quieter the environment, the more hidden the fatal danger.
Inwardly, I was quite puzzled. The only force within the Du'an tribe capable of assassinating me, after much thought, was the Shepherd's Emissaries under the High Priest.
But the strange part was this: I had already promised the High Priest that the Shepherd's Blessing ceremony would be held in a few days. At this juncture, he had no reason to attack me.
And the Shepherd's Emissaries were essentially a group of fanatics, impervious to the orders of others.
Could it be...
"If you have the guts to assassinate me, do you not have the guts to come out and face me!"
"I demand an explanation, Shepherd's Emissaries of the High Priest!"
Just now, a thought had flashed through my mind in a split second.
Originally, I had intended to remain silent and wait for them to disperse on their own, but now I had to force them out.
My words carried far into the cold winter night. After a few minutes, just as I was beginning to suspect that the mysterious emissaries had left, there was movement in the grass before me.
A man, clad in a black robe and wearing a strange mask, emerged from the bushes.
Even though he was completely covered by the black robe, it couldn't conceal his imposing stature; he was well over two meters tall, and even I had to look up at him.
"Commander Bado, we had no intention of attacking you. We merely wish for you to hand over the traitor behind you."
Although the black-robed giant's words were respectful, they carried a hint of condescension, as if I would readily hand over Mr. A behind me the moment he spoke.
Damn it, what era is this? Still trying to act tough in front of me!
The Du'an Temple Street, ask around, who's the boss!
"I have no traitor here, only my guest! You said you wanted to eliminate the person behind me, but the range of those poisoned arrows included me, didn't it?"
That's a tricky matter. Some things can only be done, not said aloud. All filth will melt away like ice under the sun.
Perhaps the Shepherd's Emissaries saw me with Mr. A and thought that since they were both obstacles to the High Priest, they would take this opportunity to eliminate me as well.
But they never expected that they would miss both of us, making a fool of themselves.
"Commander Bado, are you going to defy the High Priest's orders?!"
Although the black-robed giant wore a mask and I couldn't see his expression, I could tell from his tone that it was filled with naked threat.
I truly didn't understand what these Shepherd's Emissaries were thinking. Had they trained their brains into muscle?
Don't they know whose territory this is!
I didn't rush to speak. Instead, I calmly took out something resembling a bird whistle from my waist and put it in my mouth to blow.
"Swoosh... swoosh..."
The short, sharp whistle sound spread rapidly through the darkness. In a moment, there was movement from the temple guard camp not far from me.
I watched as a vast dragon of fire approached me from the temple guard camp, led by Hu Jialuo and Hutou.
This whistle was custom-made by me. During the temple guards' training sessions in the daytime, I had told them that this whistle signified an emergency and that they must rush to my side immediately upon hearing it.
By the time Hu Jialuo and the others arrived, the torches they carried seemed to raise the camp's temperature by a few degrees.
It was then that I leisurely looked at the black-robed giant leading the opposing group.
"From what you just said, are you planning to fight me?!"
