Chapter 1409: 【1409】The situation is not looking good
Every year, quite a few medical students give up, not because they can’t study well or for other reasons, but solely because they collapse mentally from watching patients suffer while being unable to help.
A doctor’s heart needs to be a bit cold because the person who often accompanies the patient to their last journey is also the doctor. Doctors are destined to watch as patients leave this world.
“Doctor Jiang, what’s the patient’s condition now?” Xie Wanying asked Teacher Jiang.
Doctor Jiang patted her shoulder, reminding her there were others present, then led her to the side to quietly inform her of the situation: “The Director has arrived.”
The patient introduced by Section Chief Yang was on the brink of death just after being transferred here. Director Zheng quickly came back to the hospital upon hearing about this situation.
With the Director here, at least the attending physicians on duty tonight had to come, hence the crowd of doctors present.
Xie Wanying turned around and saw Director Zheng, whom she had met before. Director Zheng stood with another older, bespectacled doctor.
“That’s Doctor Li Guoxin, Associate Professor.” Doctor Jiang introduced his superior, who was also the attending physician after the patient’s admission.
The Associate Professor couldn’t afford to mind the medical students, as Li Guoxin was wholly focused on reporting the situation to the leaders: “They started resuscitation at eight o’clock, saying the patient suddenly convulsed. Once I heard this, I thought it wasn’t good, so I quickly ordered a blood test and called the resident doctor. I then rushed back by car. Director, you saw when you arrived, the blood pressure slightly recovered. We’ve already transfused a bag of blood. The red blood cells were a bit low before, so internal bleeding cannot be ruled out.”
“Is there blood in the drainage bag?” Director Zheng asked, looking down at the drainage bag connected to the patient’s abdominal drainage tube, noticing little to nothing coming out, frowned slightly, “Is the tube blocked?”
“Seems blocked.” Li Guoxin did not deny the leader’s suspicion and explained, “His body is too weak, and we don’t know what’s going on inside. After admission today, we didn’t dare to flush the tube. Planned to decide after completing the examinations in the next few days.”
“Before they were transferred, did they flush the tube at the other hospital?” Director Zheng asked.
“No.” Li Guoxin said, “They didn’t dare to flush either.”
Upon hearing this, Director Zheng felt like rolling his eyes, his tone beginning to show a bit of complaint: “The people who placed the tube during surgery didn’t dare to flush it.”
It is best for the doctor who initially placed the drainage tube to handle it, because only the surgeon knows precisely where the tube was placed inside the patient’s body and under what circumstances it was placed. Although some things are recorded according to regulations in the medical records, certain aspects like the doctor’s impression and feeling about the patient’s abdominal cavity cannot be documented and certainly cannot be included in medical records, which require academically regulated language.
This is why all doctors detest receiving these patients, calling it cleaning up after colleagues. It’s like when Song Xueling admitted that patient, even though he was a genius, it infuriated him. If not for Xie Wanying who resolved it smoothly, Song Xueling would have truly exploded that night.
“You could have requested a consultation, why insist on transferring the patient.” Director Zheng complained persistently.
“Requesting them for a consultation to provide suggestions might not have been feasible either.” Li Guoxin spoke about a potentially forthcoming reality.
Surgery isn’t like internal medicine. In internal medicine consultations, guidance is typically provided for medication strategies.
