Chapter 1099: Chapter 646: Midnight Pursuit
Japan, Heian-kyo.
In the dark of night, a chase was underway in the narrow alleys.
“Quick, chase her, she just passed through here.”
“There’s no one this way, ah…”
“The wind, listen to the wind, she’s over here…”
“Monster, you have nowhere to run today.”
…….
A group clad in Onmyoji outfits, Japanese Witches swiftly moved through the alleys. They were members of the Heian-kyo Onmyoji Bureau’s Demon Hunting Special Action Team.
The Demon Hunting Special Action Team, an Ace Team of Onmyoji existing since the inception of the Yin Yang Bureau, has been consistently active at the forefront of combating demons. They have saved countless innocent civilians from demons’ clutches and are seen as heroes by most residents of Heian-kyo.
However, tonight, the task of this Ace Team wasn’t progressing smoothly.
Over the past months, supernatural attacks surged in Heian-kyo, rendering the Onmyoji continuously working overtime. Even the Demon Hunting Special Action Team, usually quite leisurely, was now constantly dispatched for tasks, engaging in such overtime.
Only heaven knows what’s happening; anyway, even the rare Great Demons appeared in droves recently, as evidenced by this Great Demon Scythe Weasel they were currently chasing down.
Scythe Weasel, a wind monster, often when a great gust blows past, people surprisingly find wounds on their limbs or clothes, like being sliced by a sharp blade. These wounds are minute, painless, and barely noticeable; the affected often become aware of them much later. The Japanese believe these are caused by the claws of the Scythe Weasel.
Of course, ordinary Scythe Weasel monsters aren’t particularly powerful and are quite easily subdued. But this one was different; it was a Scythe Weasel that had reached the level of a Great Demon. The wind that once only caused minor injuries could now decapitate humans.
Just a few hours ago, this Scythe Weasel demon infiltrated a Chinese Clan Patriarch’s residence, leaving no survivors after the demonic wind.
The gruesome crime alarmed the Special Action Team, but even with these elite Onmyoji involved, they couldn’t quickly subdue this brutal Great Demon. Many team members were injured too.
“Be careful…..”
Another fierce wind gusted by, prompting the Onmyoji to quickly evade, yet it was too late.
The wind, which should have been colorless, stained crimson, injuring several Onmyoji.
Nonetheless, perhaps their timely evasion helped; many were injured, but mostly superficially, with no severe injuries.
“Have you had enough? If you dare pursue any further, next time it’ll be your heads rolling.”
The crimson wind transformed into a ninja witch clad in a ninja outfit, wielding dual sickle chains.
Her face was covered with a mask, obscuring her features, but her exposed eyes were full of gloom and coldness, emanating a murderous aura.
Despite her malicious gaze, it was apparent that this Scythe Weasel Witch remained very lucid.
This surprised the Onmyoji.
After all, the Yin Yang Bureau usually dealt with uncontrollable Hyakki Witches, who couldn’t restrain the demon nature within, descending into demonization, wreaking havoc everywhere as demons.
But it seemed this Scythe Weasel Witch wasn’t out of control.
Yet, if she wasn’t out of control, why would she commit such a massacre?
“You haven’t lost control? Then why are your actions so cruel?”
From the Onmyoji’s ranks, a witch stepped forth. She was stunningly beautiful, with a gentle demeanor, and judging by the respectful attitudes of the other Onmyoji, she held a high position in the Special Action Team.
Her name was Kamo Aki, the most outstanding descendant of the Kamo family in this generation and the vice-captain of the Special Action Team.
“Cruel? I only resent that you noble lackeys came too soon, preventing me from utterly dismembering those beasts.”
Hearing this, the ninja witch sneered disdainfully, speaking with scorn.
“Stubborn fool, you’ve tread the Demon Path.”
These words enraged Kamo Aki; she scowled deeply, glaring severely at the vicious demon.
“Indeed, I joined the Demon Path when all 372 lives of my clan were brutally murdered. Every one of those scoundrels deserved death.”
The ninja witch calmly stated this fact without any fear.
Upon hearing this, Miss Yin Yang frowned, then her imposing aura rapidly weakened. She carefully examined the ninja witch’s outfit and finally recognized her identity from the insignia on her forehead protector.
“You’re a ninja from Iga?”
She recalled the massacre of a Ninja Village years back. The high-ranking person who ordered the village’s destruction was apparently the very same Chinese Clan head whose family was massacred today, under the pretext of village rebellion daring to betray their master.
Well, whether the Iga Ninja Village betrayed anyone was unknown, but now, the betrayal was real, sparing not even chickens and dogs.
Realizing that the Scythe Weasel Witch was driven by vengeance, Miss Yin Yang’s imposing stance considerably weakened; she no longer held the moral high ground.
“But your methods are too cruel. If you seek justice, perhaps…”
