Chapter 191: Leah’s unexpected side.
Moon’s heart pounded. Her fingers clenched in her lap, nails biting into her skin. They thought that she could see the future but she could not. She lied about being able to do so because it was the only way to explain her rebirth.
She did not know much about President Finch’s affairs in the apocalypse. All she knew was that he had created a base but whether it was good or bad, she did not know. Rumors were all she ever heard about it when she was held by a human trafficker. She hoped to go there but the opportunity never came.
None the less, she had to say something because she had finally been invited to the table of those that mattered on the base. She had desperately been hoping to be invited and she would aim to please while over inflating her importance.
"My abilities are not stable yet but I will do my best." She started, sounding mysterious.
Leah let out a sarcastic chuckle. "Either you can see the future or not. We don’t need you to sound mysterious, you have been claiming to know the future since you moved here or was that a lie?"
"Leah, my God, let us give her a chance before dismissing her or making accusations." Dominic stepped in.
He could already feel tension in the air and he did not want it to disturb the serious business they were handling.
A tiny smile formed on Moon’s lips. She closed her eyes, lifting her chin as though entering in a trance. It almost looked like she was meditating.
Silence stretched, heavy and expectant. Inside her mind raced, grasping at scraps of memory. There was no useful information about president Finch in her mind. On the list of humans and superhumans that rose and did great things, his name was not included.
Alive or dead, she did not see the need for them to go to him. Dominic was a force of nature that accomplished great things. Camp Zenith needed to remain under his control so that it could be under her control too eventually.
If they joined Finch, they would be lumped in with other superhumans and survivors. They would be servants, not masters.
She had lived that life with Pastor Salem and was not too eager to repeat it. So, even without all the pretense, Moon already had an answer for them. She just needed them to feel like they owed her.
Coincidentally her nose began to bled as she opened her eyes slowly.
Some people gasped.
Assumptions were made that her abilities came at a great cost.
Moon coughed weakly and said softly, "I apologize for all the blood, I may have strained myself too much because I am eager to prove my worth."
Some people felt uneasy.
"Oh dear, I am sure Leah did not mean to exert any pressure onto you." One of the women said, handing her a tissue.
A few people in the room cast dissatisfied glances towards Leah.
Dominic’s warning gaze scared them from saying anything.
"Did you see anything?" Someone asked forcefully.
Moon nodded, paused and shook her head. "I saw something and also nothing"
Leah snorted.
Moon sighed and continued in the same soft voice, "What I mean is that I see no future for us with president Finch. His words are promises made of ash. He has barren land and he seeks others to build for him. We are already building something here and I believe that we should not trade what we have for a lie."
The room went silent for half a minute as everyone waited for Dominic’s verdict.
Soon, he said decisively. "We stay."
Leah looked displeased, her lips pressed in a thin line, as if resisting the urge to laugh at the spectacle. "Shouldn’t she give us more details at least like where is this so called barren land...." She let out a loud frustrated sigh, something about Moon rain was off, she just didn’t trust whatever the woman said. "Fraud." She muttered under her breath as she walked out.
Discomfort filled the air.
Dominic dismissed everyone.
Moon remained, pretending that her nose and head hurt.
"I am sorry about my wife...." Dominic said to her.
Moon waved her hands dismissively. "I have heard worse. My dead husband was very abusive, verbally and physically. I have an older sister that bullied me from childhood. My life has always been rough I am used to people not liking me."
Dominic smiled sadly at her. "But Aliana does, and many people at this place like you Moon Raine." He gave her a jacket that was resting on the arm of his chair.
"And you?" Her eyes locked into his. "Do you find me likable or is it my abilities only that make you see me as someone with some worth?"
Before he could answer, Festus knocked on the door, walked directly to Dominic and whispered something to him.
In turn, he dismissed her immediately.
Moon cursed Festus as she left. Why did the bastard have to come in right then? As she stomped off angrily, she wondered when she would get another opportunity to be alone with Dominic again?
She also wondered if she had rushed into asking Dominic what he thought of her. She did not want him thinking that it was her intention to seduce him. So, she needed to get rid of that perception quickly.
She also needed to speed up her plans to ruin his marriage. Now that Leah knew about her closeness with Aliana, there was no way the woman would allow the relationship to develop any further.
Moon could see it in Leah’s body language now that she was no longer hiding the dislike she had for her. She was expressing it openly. This was both a good and bad thing.
Good because people would stop seeing Leah as a reasonable kind angel and more like a jealous angry woman. But it would be bad if Dominic chose his wife’s side and pushed her away.
She was suddenly yanked into the corner and pushed to the wall. Before she could make heads or tails of what was going on, she was slapped across the cheek.
Then, she was pushed down and the jacket which Dominic had put over her shoulders was removed roughly.
She blinked a few times, her mind was spinning like a ceiling fan. A hand pressed down on her shoulder really hard and she cried out.
As her vision cleared up, she realized that Leah was the one leading the assault on her. Leah’s close friends and her bodyguards were also there, keeping watch in a circle that blocked other people from seeing what was going on in the corner.
"Do you think that I don’t know what you are up to?" Leah asked her.
Moon winced as her shoulder was dislocated from the arm. Tears came from her eyes and she raised her other hand to push Leah away.
It never crossed her mind that Leah could be vicious and fight dirty. She also didn’t realize that the woman had probably awakened. The kind of strength she had was abnormal.
Moon’s nose started bleeding again.
"Stop or I will make your life here a living hell." Leah warned her.
