Chapter 1554: Chapter 1554: The Adorable Daughter
“You’re not that fragile, but you also don’t have to be so strong. If you want, my shoulder is always here for you to lean on,” Evan Guerrero’s voice was calm and tender.
Sometimes, he wished she wasn’t so strong.
At the very least, when she turned around, she would realize that he was still standing behind her, guarding her.
“Evan…” she called his name, but in the end, her voice choked into silence.
Evan Guerrero let out a sigh deep in his heart. Such a shame he wasn’t in Landon, wasn’t by her side.
He knew that since she was young, her parents had passed away, and she had grown up living with her grandfather, getting used to fending for herself and not relying on others.
It was precisely because of that self-reliance that, no matter what big or small challenges came her way later in life, she habitually faced them alone.
“From now on, I’ll always be by your side,” Evan Guerrero promised with little elaboration.
It was a promise he knew he could keep.
He was never one to make promises lightly, but once he did, he would always follow through.
Just as he vowed to treat Little Candy well, and now, step by step, he was fulfilling that, treating Little Candy as his own.
Ann Nolan didn’t respond. She just covered her mouth and cried silently.
Tears soaked through her collar and dripped onto the steering wheel.
Sunlight streamed in through the car window, but her face was as pale as paper.
“Ann, come home,” Evan Guerrero’s voice was filled with heartache as he heard her sobs. “I’m waiting for you at home. I made the tom yum soup you love, and Little Candy is waiting for you too.”
“Okay… I’ll come home now…”
“Good. Be good—take the next available flight.”
Ann nodded furiously, unable to say another word.
She wanted to go home…
She wanted to curl up in the warmth of her home and look at her adorable daughter.
Landon was too cold. Her heart felt like it was trapped in an icebox, as if staying even a moment longer would freeze it solid.
Ann hung up the call, wiped away her tears, and summoned every ounce of courage she had to grip the steering wheel tightly once more.
The car started up again, smoothly heading down the road toward the airport.
She would never return to Landon again.
On the way, she made another call—to Jasmine Yale.
Jasmine was anxiously waiting at the Cheney Residence for news about Sylvan Cheney. Hearing the phone ring, she jumped and quickly picked it up.
“Ann!”
“It’s me, Jasmine.” Ann Nolan’s voice was still unsteady, like a lump in her throat. “Jasmine, I worried you. I’m fine now.”
“Where did you go? I heard you weren’t in Old York?”
“Mm, I came to Landon for a short trip, but I’m leaving soon.”
“Leaving already? I’m in Landon too—can’t we meet even for a little while?” Jasmine asked anxiously. She still didn’t know what had happened.
“No, Little Candy is waiting for me at home. We’ll meet in UT.”
“Alright. Take care. Are you really okay?”
“I’m fine, for real.”
Jasmine still felt uneasy. Just then, Sylvan Cheney walked in from outside the living room.
After a few more words, Jasmine hung up the phone.
“Ann called. She said she’s fine and that she’s in Landon,” Jasmine said.
“Mm.”
“What happened? Did you find out anything?” Jasmine held onto Sylvan’s arm, her anxiety written all over her face.
“Ann came back from Old York to see Zaiden.”
“Zaiden? He…”
“He’s gone.”
Jasmine covered her mouth, her eyes filling with shock as she looked at Sylvan in disbelief.
But Sylvan wasn’t the kind of person to joke about such matters. She saw the heaviness and grief in his expression.
He’s gone…
That meant the news about the mining accident was true?
No wonder Ann had returned to the country.
Jasmine couldn’t pull herself out of her emotions for a long time. She stared at Sylvan, her eyes wide with disbelief.
