Zhang Nu nodded at Ling Xi’s comment, realizing he had indeed acted in desperation. While they were all beasts, each belonged to a different race, so of course their languages weren’t mutually intelligible.

At that moment, Lin Xiao seemed to sense something. The lead wolf appeared extremely agitated, pacing restlessly as if there was something urgent it needed their help with.

Lin Xiao quietly walked over to Zhang Nu and shared his thoughts.

“Zhang Nu, I think the wolf pack needs our help. The alpha looks nervous and keeps pacing back and forth. It’s very possible it wants us to follow it somewhere.”

Zhang Nu followed Lin Xiao’s gaze to the lead wolf. As expected, the wolf was just as Lin Xiao described—restless, clearly anxious.

“Do you need our help?” Zhang Nu asked.

Surprisingly, the wolf nodded at him and howled twice at the sky.

“Awooo~ Awooo~”

The moment Zhang Nu heard the howls, he suddenly understood. “The alpha really does need our help. Let’s go with them. I think something’s happened to the mother wolves. Otherwise, the pack wouldn’t be acting like this.”

The others nodded. While they weren’t particularly afraid of the wolves, the creatures had never shown any signs of aggression. Now they were actively seeking help—it would be wrong to ignore them.

“You’re right. We should do what we can,” Liu Hai said.

Without delay, the group followed the wolves deep into the forest. 

Soon, they were led to the entrance of a cave. From inside, they could hear faint whimpering sounds. It was exactly as they had suspected—something had gone wrong. Was it a difficult labor?

As the group hesitated at the cave’s mouth, the alpha wolf gave them a hard shove, nudging them inside. Zhang Nu and the others could only stumble forward, half-laughing, half-exasperated.

But once they stepped inside, the air was thick with the metallic scent of blood. They didn’t know where it came from, but forced themselves to press on.

When they reached the deepest part of the cave, they saw the source—over a dozen mother wolves were in labor, and all of them were experiencing complications.

Zhang Nu and the others froze, stunned by the sight. None of them had the faintest idea how to assist in something like this.

What were they supposed to do? Just stand here and watch?

Ling Xi looked on with heartache. These wolves were fighting with everything they had to bring new life into the world, yet clearly something was going very wrong.

“Zhang Nu,” she said, her voice soft, “we have to help them. They’re suffering so much.”

Zhang Nu understood how she felt. But none of them had any knowledge or experience with this. How exactly were they supposed to help?

“I want to help too,” he said. “But we don’t even know where to begin. What can we possibly do?”

Ling Xi fell silent as well. She had no answer. Her only hope now was Lin Xiao. He was the most intelligent among them. If anyone could think of something, it was him.

“Lin Xiao,” she turned to him, her voice laced with urgency. “Is there anything you can do? These poor mother wolves... they’re in much pain.”

When Lin Xiao saw Ling Xi looking at him with such pleading eyes, something stirred unexpectedly in his heart. She looked so earnest, so vulnerable—it made him want to protect her.

“If I’m not wrong,” Lin Xiao said calmly. “The difficulty is caused by exhaustion. Their strength has run out, and that’s what’s making labor impossible.”

“What we can do is transfer some of our inner energy into them. That should give them the strength they need to deliver safely.”

Zhang Nu turned to him in shock. He hadn’t expected Lin Xiao to know this sort of thing at all. But now that they had a method, there was no time to waste. Everyone sprang into action.

They didn’t want to stand by and watch these wolves die helplessly. Every life has the right to be born into this world. Every life deserves dignity.

“Yes,” Zhang Nu said firmly. “We have to help them bring all those pups into the world. It’s our responsibility to do so.”
