Chapter 223: 223 Spring Planting
"I’ll go back and discuss it. Maybe one day when I have my own household registration, I’ll focus less on farming and more on raising pigs."
Yuanyuan laughed, thinking this was a very realistic goal.
After they finished eating, no matter what, Zhao Yanli refused to stay. She wanted to go back to find her elder and second brothers because they also needed to cover their fields with plastic mulch and plant cotton. Her little nephew was born during the big autumn, and they would need a lot of cotton by winter.
Growing their own cotton would make a difference; they wouldn’t have to worry then.
Watching Yanli leave in a hurry, Yuanyuan felt this girl’s personality was really nice. She liked that.
Zhao Yanli went home. After talking to her elder brother, she went to find her second brother and elder sister.
The six members of the Zhao Family naturally agreed. So, they directly covered the prepared sweet potato ridges. Just like that, it could work.
Two days later, Su Yuanyuan started planting cotton seedlings. To be honest, this work was really exhausting, especially since you had to squat the whole time.
Yuanyuan began to slack off a bit as she worked, widening the spacing between the plants, comforting herself that they’d grow better this way.
So, when Zhao Qingjie and his siblings came to dig up the cotton seedlings, Yuanyuan gave them more than half.
Mainly because she was afraid she wouldn’t have any place to plant them later. They had more people, worked faster, so she decided to give them more.
Zhao Qingjie looked at the little girl who had lost a lot of weight, his eyes full of concern.
"Don’t push yourself so hard. If you can’t handle it, take it slow."
"Second Brother Zhao, don’t worry, I’m okay here. I know what I’m doing."
Four days later, five acres of cotton were planted. Then, it was time to start planting corn without stopping.
There were still over thirty acres left to plant with corn. So Yuanyuan hurried to work with Little Donkey.
It was already mid-June. The temperature at noon was still very high, but she had to work in the sun.
There was no choice but to keep going; just a little more left, she had to see it through.
It took twelve days for all the corn to be planted, and those planted on the first day had already sprouted.
It was inevitable since she was working alone. Anyway, she would be doing the harvest alone too, so it was actually quite good. She comforted herself a bit, and that made her feel better. How does it feel to finish planting right before it rains? Simply wonderful!
Lying on the kang, she slept the whole day without eating.
Even after waking up the next day, she still felt exhausted.
When the rain stopped, Yuanyuan went to Tan Shaoting’s old house, took out ten bags of fertilizer, and forced herself to store them in the space.
She put on rain boots, a raincoat, and rubber gloves that extended above her elbows.
She started applying fertilizer to the winter wheat. The winter wheat had already started to spike, so it seemed just the right time to fertilize, though Yuanyuan wasn’t sure, she just felt it was needed.
The original thirty acres of wheat, even if half remained, was still fifteen acres. So from morning till night, Yuanyuan still hadn’t finished fertilizing; she hadn’t eaten all day, feeling both tired and hungry.
Only three acres left, she was determined to finish today, otherwise she’d have to continue tomorrow, and she couldn’t stand this outfit any longer.
So she used her superpower. That was much faster. By nine o’clock, she had showered and was lying in her space asleep.
No fire was lit outside all day. So, it’s better to sleep in the space.
The next day, she woke up full of energy. There wasn’t much to do today, so she put on her rain boots and wandered through the spring wheat fields. The seedlings were already as tall as chives, looking lush. It was fine, and if it rained in a few days, it would be time for more fertilizer.
There were indeed quite a few weeds, and Yuanyuan decided to ignore them, there was simply no energy left for weeding.
Forget it, what you can’t see can’t bother you.
The corn seedlings were also quite sturdy. The sweet potatoes and potatoes really needed to be planted, so she spent half a day cutting potatoes into pieces and soaking them in Spiritual Spring Water. In the afternoon, she took a ride to the Zhao Family, bringing back some sweet potato seedlings, enough to plant about ten acres, with potatoes to fill the rest.
Planting sweet potatoes required squatting. After one day, she had planted five acres, and ended up crawling in the field, exhausted. Her legs felt wooden.
After two days, she finally finished planting the sweet potatoes. Then, another two days to plant the potatoes, having completed over one hundred thirty acres.
Lying on the kang for a day, she finally felt rested.
Then she started planting winter melons, and the cucumber seedlings in the yard were also planted, taking two days to finish both courtyards.
In the front yard of Tan Shaoting’s courtyard, she started organizing the yard, not for planting vegetables, but for creating a threshing ground, using her superpower directly. Mental fatigue was better than physical discomfort.
The front yard was nearly an acre, making it a good threshing ground. Once it rained and compacted it, it would be better.
The wheat at home was too much, and without a threshing ground, it would be tough. There wouldn’t be room to store it then.
Bit by bit, she tidied up. There was no way to completely remove the wild grass from the fields; it was simply impossible to keep up.
Since that was the case, she’d just not bother from the start. Now she finally understood how people felt when their fields were overgrown with weeds.
Just as she was busy setting up the threshing ground, Group Leader Ma and Director Feng came by with a cart.
When they couldn’t find Yuanyuan at the Su Family place, they knew she’d be here, and when they came in, they saw the threshing ground had been made exceptionally smooth and solid.
"Director Feng, Group Leader Ma."
"Xiao Su, you really are incredible. We should bring those big guys over to see. Look at you, a little girl farming over a hundred acres, while they work as a whole family and still complain!" Feng Baoshan marveled.
Ma Changshun watched the little girl standing in front of them. She wasn’t a little girl anymore, having grown taller, but she was indeed thin, like she’d be blown away by a gust of wind.
"Xiao Su, don’t tire yourself out."
Yuanyuan was a little moved and nodded. "Director Feng, Group Leader Ma, is there something you needed to ask?"
"We wanted to ask if you had any fertilizer left? The farm’s supply is nowhere near enough."
"I’m not sure how much I’ll have spare either. I haven’t fertilized the spring wheat and corn yet."
"How much do you have left?"
"Eight tons."
"Give five tons to the farm then. The remaining three tons should be enough for you."
"Okay, but my fertilizer is fifty yuan more per ton than yours."
Feng Baoshan was aware of this.
"We’ll reimburse you an extra hundred per ton." Their high-mindedness made him a little embarrassed.
Better to make it up to them since this fertilizer was hers, and now it was going to the farm.
"Thank you, Director Feng. You can come to pick it up anytime, just don’t drive the vehicle in, my threshing ground was just completed."
