Chapter 39 Saving the Dying and Healing the Wounded Is My Duty

Xu Qian’s cool gaze lowered, her heart settling. She was safe here.

As she walked through most of the ward, a conversation from one of the rooms made her stop abruptly.

“How did you save him?”

“I am a doctor. Saving lives is my duty.”

The voice was faint but carried an undeniable weight.

Xu Qian’s brow twitched. In this apocalypse, people were treacherous. It was rare to find someone who still held onto such principles, but why did she have a bad premonition?

“Ye Yunzhou! Things are not like they used to be. Do you understand what the apocalypse means? How many people have died? Can you save them all?”

“Professor! No need to say more. If you keep him locked up there, his injuries are severe and he needs immediate treatment.”

The middle-aged man shook his head. “We’ve taken in too many people. We’ve done our best, Yunzhou.”

Ye Yunzhou’s face turned ashen, his lips drawn tight. “You wouldn’t… you wouldn’t put him in the laboratory, would you?”

“You and I are both surgeons. Although he wasn’t bitten by a zombie, his head suffered severe damage from a violent impact. With our current medical standards, it would be better to put him in the laboratory to utilize his potential.”

“He’s not at the point of needing the laboratory. He can still be saved!”

Xu Qian’s eyes gradually turned cold as she pushed open the door.

Inside the room, both men wore white coats stained with blood. Facing them was a middle-aged man, and a young man stood with his back to them.

The morning sun shone on the young man. Despite being covered in blood, it was strange; he was enveloped in a hazy halo. Xu Qian blinked, thinking she was mistaken, but there was indeed a light emanating from him.

“Where is the laboratory?”

The two men were startled. Someone had managed to get through the zombies downstairs to reach them.

Ye Yunzhou turned and saw a girl in her teens. His previously grim expression instantly softened. His features were refined and gentle, his jawline soft, exuding a magnanimous aura that inspired a strong sense of familiarity. He seemed easy to get along with.

His eyes curved slightly, and his tone was calm. “Student, how did you get up here?”

Xu Qian looked at the gentle, handsome face and was rendered speechless. With such a noble character, she couldn't bring herself to say anything sarcastic.

She lowered her gaze, suppressing her temper, and asked, “I’m looking for a friend. Where is your laboratory?”

Ye Yunzhou’s eyes flickered. He replied softly, “Well, what does your friend look like? I can take you to find him. He might not be in the laboratory.”

“Silver hair, looks… quite good.”

Ye Yunzhou’s expression darkened. He glanced sideways at the middle-aged man.

The middle-aged man frowned and said sternly, “Follow me. His condition is not good. We rescued this person by chance when our team went out to find food. When we saved him, his car had already flipped over, and he had severe head injuries.”

Xu Qian’s heart tightened. She followed the middle-aged man to the last ward. He opened the door, and Mei Yuebai lay on the hospital bed, his head heavily bandaged.

Ye Yunzhou quickly stepped forward to examine him, then breathed a sigh of relief. “Student, his condition is relatively optimistic. He’ll wake up in a couple of days.” He reached out and gently pressed Mei Yuebai’s forehead. A white light emanated from his palm.

Mei Yuebai’s complexion visibly changed from pale to somewhat ruddy.

Xu Qian’s eyes narrowed slightly. This Ye Yunzhou possessed a healing ability. Days after the mutation, she had finally encountered someone with an ability other than those in their Sun God Team.

The light in his palm gradually dimmed, and the halo around him also diminished significantly. He withdrew his hand, his usually gentle expression becoming somewhat stiff. “Professor, why did you lie to me?”

“To give you a warning. It’s true that our hospital has taken in too many people, and we don’t have the resources. This entire hospital building has zombies on every floor except this one. If we continue to save more people, where will they live? What will they eat?”
