Chapter 408: Chapters 384-386: The Child Was Not Saved
Chapter 384:
"Is it worth it?" Wen Nuan quietly repeated Tong Xi’s words, a slight arch of her brow, endless desolation surging in her eyes. She subtly raised her chin, preventing tears from spilling out, took a deep breath after a long time, her face carrying a hint of a bitter smile:
"If I had known this was the result, I would never have loved him. But things have already happened, and there’s no turning back. I can only accept it and strive to make the child happy."
She couldn’t be like some sentimental women who, after being hurt, could still say "I don’t regret loving him."
She regretted it, regretted it so much it hurt! She thought she could love without regrets too, but when the man who had sworn promises to her just days ago turned and gave her up for a child, she didn’t have the magnanimity to "forgive" him.
She hated, hated Ji Wei, hated Leng Yan!
But then what? Can she go back to three years ago, can she erase everything that happened?
Since she can’t, she might as well learn to let go, to focus on living her own life, to transfer her love for him onto the child, it’s the only thing she can do, and the only thing she wants to do.
"If Tan Qing couldn’t persuade you, it seems I’m powerless too. Once you’ve set your mind on something, not even nine oxen can drag you back." Tong Xi was exasperated, yet helpless. Aunt Liu brought some apples, Tong Xi picked one, peeled it, and handed it over, saying with concern, "Take care of yourself and the baby, don’t let those two wicked people ruin your life."
"I knew you would understand me." Wen Nuan accepted it, took a bite of the apple, her lips curving slightly: "We’ve been talking about my matters, I forgot to ask about you and Tan Qing. Did he tell you about my matters? It looks like you two have some sort of connection."
"There’s no connection, I intentionally waited for him under the MT building today, and said I was just passing by. We had lunch together, and that’s when he told me."
Tong Xi sighed dejectedly, peeling an orange, the corner of her lips lifting into a lonely smile: "Nuannuan, won’t you give Tan Qing a chance?"
"I’ve said before, there’s no possibility with him." Wen Nuan smiled faintly, patting her on the shoulder: "Don’t worry, I’m not giving up Tan Qing because of you, so don’t blame yourself. It’s because I can’t fall in love with Tan Qing, and the Tan Family would never accept me."
Ultimately, it was a missed connection, ultimately unsuitable.
"If you were willing to give up the child, maybe it would be possible. The Tan Family doesn’t know about this, Tan Qing wouldn’t mind." Tong Xi bit her lip, still feeling there might be a glimmer of hope.
On the way, she had thought for a long time. She didn’t want Wen Nuan to lose the chance to be with Tan Qing because of her, otherwise she would be consumed by intense guilt.
"Impossible!" Wen Nuan’s tone was soft yet extraordinarily firm: "Xixi, don’t bring up anything about Tan Qing and me anymore. Even if I didn’t know you liked Tan Qing, I could never be with him. You know, I’ve tried but it just doesn’t work."
After trying to persuade Wen Nuan to return to design, which she dismissed by saying she would see about it later, Tong Xi left the Wen Family, returning to her original residence, but found it hard to fall asleep.
Every time she closed her eyes, all she could see were the silhouettes of that pair!
"Turtle paired with a jackal, green tea paired with a scumbag!"
She cursed through gritted teeth, her mind replaying the nauseating actions of Ji Wei and Xiao Liu in the theater.
And Leng Yan’s shamelessly tender demeanor towards Wen Nuan, once felt beautifully poetic, but now felt nothing but disgust.
She slept until very late in the morning, and it was after nine when she got up, her stomach growling with hunger. Remembering the best wontons were available nearby, Tong Xi drove Tan Qing’s car over. Because it was late, there weren’t too many people. After buying some and just about to get into the car, a voice caught her attention.
Adjusting her collar up to cover her face a bit and putting on large sunglasses, she sat in the car, watching the woman on the phone.
She didn’t hear wrong; it was indeed Xiao Liu’s voice, anxiously speaking into the phone while holding a portion of wontons just like hers.
Sneakily driving the car closer to Xiao Liu, Tong Xi lowered the window slightly, finally catching her words, which were directed to Ji Wei.
"Sister Ji, I bought the wontons from your favorite place. I’m on my way back now, don’t worry, it’s not good for you and the kid." Xiao Liu said helplessly into the phone, then got in her car and left.
"Hmph, with a mother like that, the child won’t turn out well." Tong Xi muttered under her breath, a thought crossed her mind, and she quietly followed.
Xiao Liu entered the elevator on the left, and Tong Xi smiled leisurely, following in another elevator.
