Fu Wenhai felt displeased, but he was skilled at concealing his emotions. Despite his profound dissatisfaction with Yan Xi, his outward reaction was minimal.
Yan Xi, oblivious to Fu Wenhai's inner turmoil, spoke her mind freely. She didn't care whether Fu Wenhai was willing to listen or not.
Yan Xi observed Fu Wenhai for a moment before speaking again. "Mr. Fu, you have both a son and a daughter now, a situation many envy. But don't be too foolish. Raising children for others means they won't be there to care for you in your old age."
Yan Xi cut to the chase, directly implying that Fu Wenhai's children were not his biological offspring.
Fu Wenhai harbored his own doubts. Years ago, when Fu Yan Ting fell ill and required hospitalization, Fu Yan Ting's blood type differed from his. He had confronted Li Qin at home, who claimed it was a hospital error.
Disbelieving Li Qin, Fu Wenhai had taken Fu Yan Ting for several paternity tests. Each test, however, confirmed that the child was his biological son.
To prove her innocence, Li Qin had even attempted suicide. Fortunately, she was discovered and rescued in time. From that point on, Fu Wenhai ceased to question Li Qin's fidelity or the paternity of their child.
The matter was put to rest. If Yan Xi hadn't brought it up so directly, Fu Wenhai might never have doubted Li Qin again.
Fu Wenhai's expression turned extremely grim. He glanced at Fu Yan Ting and said, "Now is not the time to discuss my affairs. Yan Ting is lying in the hospital, and we don't know when he will wake up. I have already hired the best caregiver to look after him."
Fu Wenhai was essentially telling Yan Xi to leave, that Fu Yan Ting was no longer her concern.
Yan Xi's lips curved into a slight smile upon hearing Fu Wenhai's words. "No need to trouble yourself. While Fu Yan Ting is hospitalized, I will stay and take care of him."
"As you wish."
Fu Wenhai seemed to have anticipated Yan Xi's response. He showed little reaction, casting a nonchalant glance at Yan Xi. After a moment of silence, he added, "Miss Yan, don't say I didn't warn you. Even if you stay to care for Fu Yan Ting, the Fu family's standards are high. After all you've done to hurt Fu Yan Ting, it's impossible for you to enter the Fu family's doors."
Yan Xi understood the implication of Fu Wenhai's words perfectly.
Yan Xi's lips curved into a slight smile. She looked at Fu Wenhai and asked, "Mr. Fu, I'm very curious, why are you so afraid of me and Fu Yan Ting being together? Will our being together affect your plans, perhaps your ambition to become the CEO of Fu's Corporation?"
"Miss Yan, these are family matters of the Fu family. What nonsense are you talking about?"
As soon as Yan Xi finished speaking, Fu Wenhai's face darkened.
Although this was precisely what Fu Wenhai had been thinking, hearing Yan Xi voice it so bluntly, without any regard for his feelings, made his expression turn extremely unpleasant.
Seeing Fu Wenhai's embarrassed anger, Yan Xi's lips curved into a slight smile. She said softly, "Isn't it obvious? You won't let me stay to care for my husband, and instead, you've hired a caregiver. Who knows if this caregiver is reliable? All I know is that you're afraid of me and Fu Yan Ting remarrying, which would threaten you."
"Miss Yan, I truly don't know what you're talking about. If you are indeed willing to care for Fu Yan Ting, then stay. No one is forcing you. However, I've already made it clear: you cannot use this opportunity to marry into the Fu family. Even without me, other members of the Fu family would not agree to your union."
Yan Xi paid no mind to Fu Wenhai's words.
Yan Xi, without any pretense of politeness, decided to stay and care for Fu Yan Ting.
The next morning, Yan Xi woke up groggily, preparing to go to the adjacent pantry to freshen up. However, as soon as she stepped out of the ward, she noticed the nurses on duty looking at her strangely. Some were even whispering amongst themselves.
Confused by this reception, Yan Xi had no idea what was happening.
Yan Xi initially thought she was overthinking things. But as she walked a few more steps, the nurses' hushed conversations grew louder. This piqued Yan Xi's curiosity. Something must have happened for them to look at her this way and whisper behind her back.
At first, Yan Xi could pretend not to notice and bear with it. However, the nurses' gazes became increasingly intrusive, and their discussions grew more pronounced. Yan Xi could no longer tolerate it.
She stopped and looked at the nurses whispering behind her back. With a hint of awkwardness but maintaining her composure, she asked, "Are you discussing me? Did something happen? Feel free to share, so we can all be in the loop."
The nurses were completely taken aback. They hadn't expected Yan Xi to catch them discussing her behind her back. Now, they were in an awkward position, unsure whether to speak or remain silent.
They exchanged glances, their embarrassment evident.
Seeing their silence, Yan Xi suddenly felt a lack of interest.
Yan Xi turned to leave.
In truth, Yan Xi wasn't overly concerned about forcing them to explain. However, their gossiping behind her back and then trying to hide it from her felt excessive.
Even if she had done something wrong, they could have just told her. That way, Yan Xi could understand her faults and make improvements.
Upon returning to the ward, Yan Xi saw Li Qin and Fu Wenhai.
This time, Li Qin did not look disheveled.
Li Qin observed Yan Xi, a slight smile playing on her lips.
Yan Xi knew instinctively that something had happened. Fu Wenhai remained silent, his gaze towards Yan Xi one of scrutiny and disappointment.
Yan Xi still had no idea what had transpired, nor why everyone was looking at her with such expressions.
Before Yan Xi could ask, Li Qin dispelled her confusion.
Li Qin stood with her arms crossed. Despite being newly pregnant, she held her belly protectively, as if to ensure everyone knew she was expecting.
Yan Xi found Li Qin's ostentatious display rather amusing.
However, in the next moment, Yan Xi's smile vanished.
Li Qin let out a cold snort and said irritably, "Miss Yan, if I were you, I wouldn't have the face to appear here again. Look at your scandal. Do you really think Fu Yan Ting can't live without you? Is the Fu family so dependent on you?"
