Chapter 9 The First Night, the Unveiling of Human Nature

Luo Luo hugged two cats nervously, huddled on the sofa.

An Nuan made her a cup of hot cocoa, then walked to the large window.

The mushroom-shaped clouds of twilight in the sky grew larger, and the rain showed no sign of stopping, rather, it was intensifying.

In another two days, the space below the fifth floor of the city would be completely submerged, and the city's transportation would be paralyzed.

By the fifth day, everything below the eighth floor would be underwater, and one could only travel by inflatable boat in the city, even making a small fortune by doing so.

An Nuan knew this beforehand, which was why she chose a location on the highest terrain and improved the drainage system.

Her current position was equivalent to the 12th floor of the city.

She would not be submerged by the heavy rain.

Luo Luo: "Xiao Nuan, do you think the heavy rain will stop?"

"It will."

Luo Luo’s shoulders relaxed slightly, a hint of relief showing on her face.

An Nuan couldn't bear to discourage her.

The heavy rain was a minor issue. What followed was a drop in temperature from fifty to sixty degrees Celsius down to minus twenty degrees.

A large number of people would freeze to death due to the extreme temperature difference.

An Nuan still remembered the frozen corpses of adults and children in the hallway, turned into ice sculptures.

So vivid, so cruel…

An Nuan couldn't be bothered to dwell on those thoughts.

She turned and walked into the kitchen; the refrigerator was already full.

An Nuan washed the rice first and cooked enough for two meals a day.

Although supplies were abundant, eating more meant excreting more, and it was easy to gain weight. If she had to fight zombies, it would be a disadvantage.

She needed to ensure sufficient nutrition, as well as physical strength and stamina.

For this reason, regardless of the rain or extreme cold, An Nuan decided to venture out every night when it was quiet.

Firstly, to help herself adapt.

Secondly, to improve her agility and eyesight.

When zombies craved flesh, they didn't distinguish between day and night; they would pounce and bite.

An Nuan took another potato, a few prawns, some curry, and a carrot, preparing to make a curry shrimp dish.

A handful of bok choy, stir-fried with a little lard and garlic slices, became fragrant and soft.

She cracked three eggs into a large bowl, added a pinch of salt, and whisked them quickly. She then poured in some cooled boiled water, covered it with a small lid, and placed it in the steamer.

The power system would collapse in eight days, but it was still functional now.

If not now, then when!

An Nuan seized the opportunity to make full use of the electricity.

"Miss An! Are you inside?"

In the living room, there were six large screens. The central one was the television.

The other five screens displayed surveillance of the new house's surroundings.

Suddenly, one of the screens switched to a view of her old house.

"Xiao Nuan, did you install surveillance at your old house?"

"No, I don't live there anymore, why would I install surveillance?"

Before the power system collapsed, the basic network was still up. Luo Luo immediately grabbed her laptop and started engaging with the intruder.

"Damn it! I was intercepted and bounced back! It must be that guy again!"

Black Smoke? httpδ:/m.kuAisugg.nět

Fine, he actually hacked into her surveillance system!

An Nuan was not scared; on the contrary, she felt a thrill.

Whether Black Smoke was reborn or possessed precognitive abilities, he wouldn't let himself be infected by zombies.

If he wasn't a zombie and didn't team up with the Anton family, they could be friends.

Befriending a powerful individual like him would greatly increase her chances of survival in the apocalypse.

An Nuan felt a slight flicker of excitement.

"Miss An, I know you're in there!"

Luo Luo: "Isn't that your community's property manager? He's always been the most courteous to me."

"Mm."

An Nuan replied indifferently.

She used to be the wealthy patron, so naturally, the property manager was polite.

Now, with so many people swarming to her doorstep, it was clear they had ill intentions.

An Nuan suspected that the property manager had become covetous after she transported several trucks of goods to her home.

Fortunately, she moved in the middle of the night, so no one saw.

She had also bought the new house under a false identity, so no one could find her here.

"Miss An, I am your community's property manager. You've bought a lot of things recently, haven't you? Your home must be full of food and supplies. This heavy rain might last for a long time, and everyone is suffering. Can you open the door and share some with us?"

"I'm your lawyer neighbor. My window was broken by a falling tree branch. Can we stay with you for a few days? I'll pay you!"

"Your house is Unit A, located at the highest point in the community, and you've bought a lot of food and drinks. We won't take it for free!"

"Yes, we'll pay. Let us in! My house is a flat on the front, and it's already flooded."

"Miss An, please say something!"

An Nuan's old villa was indeed in the best location in the community.

It was a five-story villa her parents had bought for a hundred million yuan when they were alive.

It had a large footprint and a spacious courtyard; their dozen or so people could shelter from the rain in the front yard.

But what good was it, even if it was good? At only five stories, it would be submerged in a few days.

The water had already reached the steps. After tonight, the floor of the first level would be saturated.

Luo Luo looked at them, feeling a pang of sympathy.

"Xiao Nuan, maybe we should…"

"Be quiet, just watch."

An Nuan finished preparing the curry shrimp and brought the food to the coffee table, ready to eat.

While she was eating, the people crowded at the entrance of the old villa had grown impatient.

The lawyer, who had been so polite earlier, was the first to ram the door.

An Nuan sneered, "Luo Luo, after the apocalypse begins, besides yourself and me, you can only trust our two cats. People are the most untrustworthy!"

Lawyer Qian kicked the door frantically, his face contorted with rage, and cursed.

"Bastard, you're not going to help? Just wait until I catch you, and I'll kill you!"

"Stop wasting time with her. This little girl is alone. Let's just charge in. What can she do?"

"Miss An, if you're not going to unite with us, then I can't help it. As the community's property manager, I have to think of everyone!"

The burly property manager rammed the door with more force than the lawyer.

The others joined in, some rushing into the rain to pick up objects and hurl them at the windows, while others pointed at the house and cursed.

The people who had been politely begging for help moments ago had all changed.

Luo Luo stared, dumbfounded.

"Xiao Nuan, what's wrong with them?"

"Nothing's wrong. It's just that humanity's selfish and cruel side has been exposed. Luo Luo, you must remember that besides me and the two cats at home, you can't trust anyone else."

Bang!

The security guard broke down the door: "Charge! Catch her, kill this little bitch!"

"Selfish, do you still deserve to be called human?"

"You made me stand in the rain for so long, let's see how I'll deal with you!"

They rampaged through the villa like mad dogs, turning the house upside down.

Especially the kitchen and the storage room; the refrigerator door and the cabinets were ripped off.

"No food? The refrigerator is empty!"

"The cabinets are empty too!"

"Damn it, not even a sanitary pad! Li, didn't you say she brought back a lot of supplies?"

Lawyer Qian kicked him away.

"Goddamn it, you said there were supplies here? You lied to me!"

Lawyer Qian walked over with a wooden stick.

Everyone slowly raised the items they had at hand and began to close in on the property manager…
