Chapter 38 The Unconscionable

Cheng Tianhua's family was waiting at home for Sixth Aunt's people to deliver pork.

Although Qi Chengyan had killed the pig, since Cheng You and San Leng had discovered it, Cheng You should at least get a share.

Unexpectedly, when it was time to cook, no one had arrived.

Cheng Tao clutched her stomach. The most important thing wasn't hunger, but craving.

She had thought everyone would get to eat meat today, but it turned out to be a wasted hope.

"Dad, why don't you go check at Grandma Liu's house?"

Song Yulian hesitated to speak, ultimately holding back.

She had been waiting to cook, specifically for this piece of meat.

With such a large wild boar, she couldn't possibly not get a single piece of meat, right?

Cheng Tianhua's expression darkened, his dissatisfaction with Cheng You escalating to its peak.

Even if Sixth Aunt hadn't thought of it, Cheng You should have, shouldn't she?

In plain terms, she had become wild and unfilial!

Cheng Tao suddenly stood up, "Dad, why don't I go take a look? I don't need to eat the meat, but you're Cheng You's father. You should get a share of this pork."

Cheng Tianhua was too proud to ask for it himself, not that he didn't want the meat.

Now that Cheng Tao volunteered to go, he nodded.

"Go ahead, and take a couple of eggs with you to see Cheng You."

It was appropriate to show some fatherly affection, even if not for Cheng You, then for his own reputation.

Cheng Tao reluctantly pocketed two eggs and left.

Halfway there, she felt unwilling to just give the eggs to Cheng You.

After some thought, she found a place to hide the eggs.

Covering them with straw, she then left.

San Leng, who had been following behind, still carried a piece of meat in his hand.

He reached inside and pulled out two eggs.

San Leng pouted. These two eggs, and she was hiding them like treasures.

He chuckled and pocketed the eggs.

Whoever saw them first got them. Too bad for Cheng Tao that he saw them.

With the two eggs, San Leng, carrying the meat, knocked on Cheng Tianhua's door.

"Uncle, my grandma asked me to bring you some meat."

Cheng Tianhua's face immediately lit up with a smile. "Why are you being so polite? The elder should keep it for herself."

San Leng didn't know how to make polite conversation. He put down the meat and was about to leave.

He hadn't gone far when he heard Song Yulian complain, "Why is it so little? This is only about a pound, right?"

Out of a three-hundred-pound wild boar, they were giving just one pound.

San Leng stopped in his tracks and turned to look at her.

"This is still little? You scolded Cheng You sister for eating two spoonfuls of white sugar, and now this pound of wild boar meat is little? If it weren't for my sister, I wouldn't have brought it."

Spoiled at home, San Leng was naturally a defiant character.

He didn't care if Song Yulian was an elder and directly retorted.

Cheng Tianhua quickly said, "It's not little, it's not little. This is enough."

San Leng snorted and swaggered out.

Cheng Tianhua was, of course, dissatisfied, but he was even more dissatisfied with Song Yulian for voicing her thoughts.

"You complained when there was no meat, and now that there is meat, you're still complaining it's not enough! Song Yulian, you weren't like this before. You said you'd support me no matter how hard things got. What's changed now? Have I mistreated you and your daughter?"

Cheng Tianhua hadn't been the production team leader from the start.

Jiang Qing was quite favored in the old Jiang family, and her family valued her highly.

More importantly, her father, Cheng You's maternal grandfather, was the brigade secretary.

Without the strong support of the old Jiang family, he would never have become the production team leader.

Back then, he had gone through a difficult period, and Song Yulian had never disliked him.

But after she entered the old Cheng family, her temperament changed.

Song Yulian finally couldn't hold back, tore off her apron, and threw it forcefully on the ground.

"Am I only thinking of myself? I'm doing this for this family! Such a large wild boar, and they only give you a pound of meat. If someone told me Cheng You was your biological daughter, I wouldn't believe it!"

Cheng Tianhua shouted in exasperation, "Keep your voice down! Aren't you embarrassed?"

"You think I'm embarrassing now? What were you doing before? If you think I'm embarrassing, then you shouldn't have married me!"

"..."

Cheng Tianhua and Song Yulian's first argument in years erupted, and the neighbors listened with keen interest.

They had clearly forgotten about Cheng Tao, who had gone to Sixth Aunt's house.

Meanwhile, Cheng Tao had just arrived at Sixth Aunt's house. Cheng Xianjing had called over a few helpers to clean up the scene.

The pork had all been sold, and it was time to pack up.

After tidying up, each of the helpers even took a piece of meat with them.

Cheng Tao's eyes widened. She couldn't be blamed for her lack of ambition.

Since coming to this era of material scarcity, she had rarely eaten meat.

If she didn't firmly believe that she would become the wife of the richest man in the future, she wouldn't have been able to persevere.

"Uncle Jing," she called out.

Cheng Xianjing was washing his hands with soap and replied with a faint "Mm" without looking up.

Because of what happened last time, Cheng Tao still felt a bit awkward.

She forced herself to say, "I'm here to see Cheng You."

Cheng Xianjing wasn't going to make things difficult for her. He pointed to one of the rooms, "She's inside."

When Cheng Tao entered the room, Cheng You was eating sponge cake.

On the table sat a freshly made cup of malted milk, a treatment no one else received.

Seeing this made her eyes turn red with envy and her heart become extremely unbalanced.

She had been anxiously waiting at home for a piece of meat, only to find Cheng You here, being doted on and treated so well?

"Cheng You, Sixth Grandma is really good to you."

Cheng You sat on the kang, swinging her legs, and nodded in strong agreement.

"I also think Sixth Grandma is good to me."

She was in a wonderful mood, especially since the wild boar meat had been sold, and she had received a quarter of the proceeds.

That was thirty yuan!

Adding the original seven-plus yuan, she was now a little rich woman with thirty-seven yuan.

Life was getting better and better.

Once the wound on her waist healed a bit, she planned to go to the supply and marketing cooperative to get some fabric to make a skirt.

All her expressions were interpreted as smugness by Cheng Tao.

"Cheng You, you're eating and drinking well here, but what about your family?"

Cheng You blinked in surprise, "What about what?"

"Such a large wild boar, don't you need to send some to your family? Your dad is worried about you at home, worrying about your injury, and this is how you treat him as a daughter?"

Cheng You felt the accusation was unreasonable. She had clearly asked San Leng to send meat over. Didn't Cheng Tao see it?

Her mind raced. After finishing the last bite of sponge cake, she put on her shoes and walked outside.

"I don't understand what you're talking about."

Cheng Tao followed her out, "You don't understand? Or you don't want to understand? You're a daughter, and you're eating and drinking well here, while ignoring your father who is worried about you at home. Don't you have any conscience?"

"Ask yourself, hasn't Dad treated you well? I didn't really come just for the meat today, but to stand up for Dad! He raised you for over ten years, and this is how you treat him? Aren't you afraid he'll be heartbroken!"
